WHAT IS RECYCLED POLYESTER?

There are two broad categories of materials that clothing can be made from; natural and synthetic. Synthetic fabrics such as Polyester and Nylon are produced from petroleum - with an estimated 343 million barrels of oil used per year to produce synthetic materials. The product of non-renewable petrochemicals, created in a process that is energy intensive and highly polluting, these materials have flooded fashion since the 70’s and propelled the growth of disposable fashion because they are so cheap. This development has come at huge expense to our planet: not only does the pollution involved in creating them contribute to global warming, but without large scale collection and recycling infrastructure most of it ends up in landfills, from where it continues to make its way into nature and oceans with it endangering our biodiversity.
Recycled PET is a synthetic material that are derived from plastic waste. These recycled alternatives are developed from plastics that already exist in the world, helping to turn waste into something useful. As an added bonus, producing recycled materials requires much less energy than virgin fibers - if deployed in the right way - while at the same time rescuing waste from landfills and oceans as it is collected or reclaimed in clean up projects.
We selectively work with recycled synthetic materials, where they contribute to garment longevity, durability, as well as support and performance. Our swim shorts are developed from 100% recycled PET bottles.

100% RECYCLED

Sustainability sits at the foundation of everything we create. Our highly green vision means that every single part of our sustainable swimwear, from the fabric right down to the packaging, is made from 100% recycled and sustainable materials.
The accumulation of plastic in our oceans has surpassed crisis point; by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish in the sea. So wherever possible, we strive to reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans during our environmentally friendly production process. We take 7 plastic bottles from our oceans to produce each pair of MARDA swim trunks.

OUR PROCESS

7 reused plastic bottles are taken from our oceans and landfills to create Marda Men’s swim trunks. Everything starts with ocean waste plastic. We collab recycled plastic bottles and post-industrial waste (including our own) to initiate the ethical manufacturing process. The waste material is chopped, ground, washed, melted and reformulated into a high-quality chip that is used to form the fibre. Then, through spinning and air-jet texturing the fibre is formed into yarn. Next, the yarn is taken and after a rigorous quality check, custom made into highly technical Japanese fabric. The end result? Fabric that is, crispy, light, soft, water-resistant and able to dry in few minutes.

Not only is our very identity based on environmentally friendly manufacturing, we also care about the people behind the manufactory. That is why we have teamed up with manufacturers who are, ethically certified through rigorous checks fulfilling extremely strict requirements. We are proud to say that in conjunction with this, they remain at the very forefront of fabric technology. The result? A socially responsible premium quality product.
